THE SILENT VALLEY
THE SILENT VALLEY
In the middle of the Mourne Mountains, old farms were cleared and the valley flooded to make a reservoir supplying Belfast's water. More than 1000 men worked on Mourne Wall which contained it. The view to Slieve Binnian looks like a lovely lake but the overflow channel in the corner shows the real purpose.

COLUMBIA RIVER at ARROW LAKE
COLUMBIA RIVER at ARROW LAKE
The 'Big Columbia River' flows 2000 miles from the Canadian Rockies to the Pacific Ocean, a major source of hydro-electric power . The view from a wooden footbridge at Arrow Lake is timeless, but behind me were four-lane highways, high-level bridges and a lot of industry in the riverside towns.

KOOTENAY LAKE to KOKANEE GLACIER
KOOTENAY LAKE to KOKANEE GLACIER
In the Canadian Rockies this road runs to a ferry taking cars and logging trucks across Lake Kootenay. The alarming element is the distant Kokanee Glacier which only 10 years ago covered even the lower slopes. The melting of glaciers and ice caps due to climate change is destroying many natural habitats.
